Summary

Shadows of Self shows Mistborn’s society evolving as technology and magic mix, the economy grows, democracy contends with corruption, and religion becomes a growing cultural force, with four faiths competing for converts。

This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict。 Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial’s progress in its tracks。

Shadows of Self will give fans of The Alloy of Law everything they’ve been hoping for and, this being a Brandon Sanderson book, more, much more。

3。5 starsI like the story, but sometimes I can't get over the contrast between how silly the characters can be and the seriousness of the story。 Also, this is probably on me, but I've been getting confused and having trouble remembering what plot lines are happening。 3。5 starsI like the story, but sometimes I can't get over the contrast between how silly the characters can be and the seriousness of the story。 Also, this is probably on me, but I've been getting confused and having trouble remembering what plot lines are happening。 。。。more

Nice detective story while the plot thickens!

Probably a little better than the previous one? Though you can tell it was written over the course of years as it really only hits its stride in the second half after a choppy first half。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Not complete spoilers, but half spoilers。 I definitely enjoyed this more than Alloy of Law。 Bleeder is more intriguing to me。 She makes you guess more often。 I loved the twist at the ending, it doesn't feel grand or makes you go "Whoa。" It's sad and confusing, definitely makes you sympathize。 I loved the introduction of MeLaan, she's funny and acts as a good partner with Wayne。 Even though she's supplies some of the humor that definitely doesn't rob her of good bits。 I'm so happy Steris is in mo Not complete spoilers, but half spoilers。 I definitely enjoyed this more than Alloy of Law。 Bleeder is more intriguing to me。 She makes you guess more often。 I loved the twist at the ending, it doesn't feel grand or makes you go "Whoa。" It's sad and confusing, definitely makes you sympathize。 I loved the introduction of MeLaan, she's funny and acts as a good partner with Wayne。 Even though she's supplies some of the humor that definitely doesn't rob her of good bits。 I'm so happy Steris is in more, but I still want more。 She has great depth and is strong。 I liked Wax more in this, though he frustrated me in the beginning with his attitude toward Marasi。 I loved his development through this, his thought process was interesting to watch。 。。。more

It only improved everything I loved about the first book of Era 2。 The connections to Era 1 are brilliant and I’m loving the western feel while it still remaining true to the fantasy genre。 Spectacular read。

Holy crap。 Wow。 Okay let me get my thoughts together。 Again, I loved the Western element to this fantasy。 This book also dug a little deeper into the surface of its characters, not just Wax—though the story definitely focused on him。 The plot was a little slower to pick up but once it did it was epic。 I think about the last half of the book all happened in one night?? And it was intense。 Then there was that ending。 My heart broke and I was genuinely surprised。 Didn’t see it coming at all。 Incred Holy crap。 Wow。 Okay let me get my thoughts together。 Again, I loved the Western element to this fantasy。 This book also dug a little deeper into the surface of its characters, not just Wax—though the story definitely focused on him。 The plot was a little slower to pick up but once it did it was epic。 I think about the last half of the book all happened in one night?? Leagues ahead of the first book in this series。 So good。 So unnerving。 So sad。 Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant Mr。 Sanderson。 Looking forward to this series more than ever now。

The second volume gets you back to the good old Era one days with tons of twists and things going sideways in more ways than one。But while the first series blows you away, this second one is slightly more predictable。

“Greet every morning with a smile。 That way it won’t know what you’re planning to do to it?”Oh, what a smile Sanderson must have given to the morning when he wrote the ending to THIS book。 Talk about emotional punch straight to heart。 The more I read about Wax, Wayne and Marasi, the more I love them as the characters。 They really grow into themselves throughout these books。 But talk about betrayals。。。 Can't wait to start the next book, so excuse me。 “Greet every morning with a smile。 That way it won’t know what you’re planning to do to it?”Oh, what a smile Sanderson must have given to the morning when he wrote the ending to THIS book。 Talk about emotional punch straight to heart。 The more I read about Wax, Wayne and Marasi, the more I love them as the characters。 They really grow into themselves throughout these books。 But talk about betrayals。。。 Can't wait to start the next book, so excuse me。 。。。more

3。5 starsThis book really picked up at the end and I liked it better than Alloy of Law, however, the second era of mistborn books just doesn't draw me in the way the epic fantasy of the first era did 3。5 starsThis book really picked up at the end and I liked it better than Alloy of Law, however, the second era of mistborn books just doesn't draw me in the way the epic fantasy of the first era did 。。。more

Actual rating: 3。5This was much better than Alloy of Law especially as we get to see more references and connections with the previous Era。 For the most part, I cared more about those than the action scenes which I still loved。 I grew to love our 3 main characters more: Wax, Wayne, and Marasi! The ending had me screaming because of how many questions it raises。 Excited for Bands of Mourning!

Starts out as a captivating murder mystery, has Wax, Wayne and Marasi follow up various leads, and ends with 。。。 a heartbreak。The book builds on the first one in the overarching conflict between Wax and friends versus the Set。Also Kandras show up again, much to the surprise of absolutely everyone in Elendel, who see them as creature of myth and legend。That being said the scenes where any Allomancy is used are as fun to read as always。 They still feel as high risk/high reward as always。 Wayne sta Starts out as a captivating murder mystery, has Wax, Wayne and Marasi follow up various leads, and ends with 。。。 a heartbreak。The book builds on the first one in the overarching conflict between Wax and friends versus the Set。Also Kandras show up again, much to the surprise of absolutely everyone in Elendel, who see them as creature of myth and legend。That being said the scenes where any Allomancy is used are as fun to read as always。 They still feel as high risk/high reward as always。 Wayne started to grow on me and Marasi as well who is now less of a damsel in distress and more capable and confident。 Steris surprisingly also shows development。Really good book, amazing ending。 Very much worth the read。 。。。more

Another adventure for Wax and Wayne under the belt。 This still isn't my favorite series。 I am still put off by the detective novel aspect of this story。 Yet, all of the Mistborn elements keep pulling me back into it。 Just as with the last book, 3。5 is my rating。Full review to come later。 Another adventure for Wax and Wayne under the belt。 This still isn't my favorite series。 I am still put off by the detective novel aspect of this story。 Yet, all of the Mistborn elements keep pulling me back into it。 Just as with the last book, 3。5 is my rating。Full review to come later。 。。。more

I adored this。 It was way more fun and entertaining than the first one in the second Mistborn era。 The cameos from the first trilogy made me squeal with joy。 And I just love the relationship between Wax, Marasi and Wayne。 Wayne is a cinnamon roll that must be protected at all costs。
